Grey and very Finnish-like weather welcomes me to Zagreb on Thursday afternoon. Luckily my friend was meeting me there, so I got a ride and didn't have to carry my almost same sized than me bag too long.
When arriving here, city seems small. But after a few moments, you realize how much there is to see and do. I have seen beautiful places and buildings, meet new people and most important to me, had some amazing food. :)
Next on my list is Museum of Broken Relationships, should be perfect for me :)
Culture shock is coming, I can feel it already. For me, it means mostly imagining home and what my friends and family are doing right now. But I know that this goes away as soon as I get all my stuff unpacked and start working and getting to know more people.
Work. That is the thing what I came here to do. So let me light up your knowledge what is EVS and how does it have anything to do youth work, European Union and outdoor activities. I will also tell the story how I got involved in this project.
EVS comes from words European Voluntary Service and it is part of European Union´s ERASMUS+-program together with bunch of other sub-programs. The program is meant to persons from 18 years old to 30 and the basic point of the program is to work in some European country 3-12 months. Topics that you can work with, change from animal protection to photography. I´m here because of adventure training, outdoor activity and youth work. Project always needs three partners. There are sending organisation, hosting organisation and then of course the volunteer. My sending organisation is Allianssi and hosting organisation Outward Bound Croatia.
Here you can read more about the program:

I found call for volunteers via Facebook page Maailmalle.net that I follow. I contacted the agency who was the sending organisation in Finland and applied. Two days later I was already had had Skype-interview and then they let me know that I got the place.
I will write more when I have settled in Croatia more and started working. I´m trying to keep this blog professional and EVS oriented but I know that there will be things about other experiences as well during the ride.
Now I´m off to meet my new co-workers and flatmates from Portugal and France, quite excited!
With croatian regards,
Elina
